Most of the cooking activities I do with the children are all mixed in the one bowl however, this one needs the dry and wet ingredients to be kept in separate bowls. During this activity, the children need to slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, which requires them to focus and work with steady hands.
They are also responsible for cutting the bananas (with a plastic knife), which is a very hard task for a toddler but it’s something they love to do and it gives me an opportunity to teach them kitchen safety. When cutting with a plastic knife the children are taught how to hold it and where to apply pressure. Again this is a difficult task but the children are always up to the challenge and are so chuffed and proud when they successfully cut the bananas.
I always invite the children to the kitchen for a cooking activity, only the children that are interested attend. If they prefer to stay and play then that’s what they do. I have to say, it's very rare that a child turns a cooking activity down. We always wash our hands and dry them before we sit at the table. After pouring the dry and wet ingredients every child is given a small cup to scoop the wet ingredients and pour it into the dry ingredient bowl. It’s a challenge and you can really see the determination on their little faces as they scoop and pour.
Ingredients
2 cups plain flour
2teaspoons baking powder
1teaspoon bicarbonate soda
2eggs lightly beaten
2 cups greek yoghurt (you can use flavoured if want, I like to keep the ingredients as close to natural as possible)
1/4 cup water
Butter for frying
Topping
sliced bananas and strawberries or whatever fruit you like.
Method
In a small bowl combine all dry ingredients together.
In a separate bowl whisk the the wet ingredients together then stir into dry ingredients until smooth.
Heat a frying pan and brush pan with butter, pour a 1/4 cup of batter pancake and cook pancake until bubbles appear on the surface aprox 3 min flip it and cook for a another minute.
Serve with bananas and strawberries.
Love,
Nava.
